Happy Hobbit Day

As many Tolkien fans know, September 22nd is the birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins birthday. For this reason, Hobbit Day resides on their shared day of birth.

So Happy Hobbit Day, have a Hobbit party:

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy have some of my favorite songs from movie soundtracks.

Here are some of my favorites from the Lord of the Rings’ soundtracks.

From Fellowship of the Ring, “Breaking of the Fellowship” and “The Nazgûl”.

From The Two Towers, “The Riders of Rohan”.

And from Return of the King, “Minas Tirith”.

Happy Hobbit Day!

Can Greatness Be Taught?: Mulan Case Study

Disney's Mulan screencap

Having a good teacher is only half the battle. I think that Disney’s Mulan exemplifies this concept. Teachers can teach, teach, teach, but it all depends on the student.

A great teacher can only benefit those who are willing to learn.

You need to just looked at the video to see the progression Mulan takes as she tries to learn to be a soldier. She is being taught the same thing as all the men, but it is not until her teacher gives up on her and tells her to head home that she succeeds.

Was it reverse psychology? Maybe her rebellious teenager side reared it’s head.

I think it was because Mulan decided to do it for herself. She did it, not because her teacher told her to do it, but because she wanted to prove something to herself.

During the movie Mulan is constantly trying to please others. This causes her to focus all on the wrong aspect of learning. To achieve greatness, especially when you are a clumsy teenage girl, you have to look within and reassess your priorities.

Once Mulan stops being dragged down by obligations and expectations, she really starts to come into her own person. She surpasses all the other trainees. And when it matters, when it means her life, when it means the safety of China, she shines.

I do not think that “greatness” can be taught.

How would it be taught, if it could be?

It all depends on the person.

Getting CDs at your Public Library

One of my favorite things about visiting my local Public Library is the selection of media. I had always thought that libraries were just for books, and when I was younger that was all I used them for. Nowadays libraries are so much more than a place to borrow books. You can check out movies, video games, magazines, and compact discs.

Halloween on Repeat

Have you noticed that every Halloween the same songs are played. The same playlist on the radio, at parties, in movies. Over and over again, until we are screaming for an entirely different reason on All Hallow’s Eve.

Well I demand a stop to this nonsense. There are plenty of songs out there and I hope that others will find them this year.

If you are hosting a themed Halloween Party, I would recommend having music that revolves around that theme. Most people either just pop in a pre-made Halloween mix or play what ever is popular at the moment. A themed Halloween Party can benefit from a themed music mix because it creates another dimension to the party.

I have an article with suggestions for certain themes, and if you have one that is not there but you need some suggestions for the soundtrack to your party then drop me comment/message. The article can be found here on Squidoo: Halloween Theme Party Music.
